Bootcamp: Back to Our Roots

Most people don’t know our gym started as a nameless Winnipeg bootcamp.

That was almost exactly 10 years ago.

We ran classes a few times a week out of the Assiniboine Athletic Club, where we pushed aside the benches in the free-weights area and created a host of fun workouts.

We started with just a few people. I think some classes were attended only by my soon-to-be wife and her mother.

But we had a lot of fun doing movements that weren’t common to gyms at the time. A Winnipeg bootcamp wasn’t new. But Functional Fitness movements were, and we had a blast teaching people how to do new things.

Though we incorporated some Functional Fitness principles in the bootcamps, but they weren’t “Functional Fitness classes.” We didn’t have the space, equipment or permission for that. We just ran bootcamp classes with functional fitness movements, and we emphasized fun.

Soon, a few more people joined, and then a few more.

Eventually, we had so many people that we needed to find our own space, which we did in 2011. Functional Fitness 204 moved into our Berry Street location, and we started offering Functional Fitness classes in a fully outfitted gym.

Winnipeg Bootcamp to Functional Fitness Facility

Over the years, I’ve realized that everyone can do Functional Fitness. For example, we have 80-year-olds who do Functional Fitness. We’ve also realized that the best way to get a person into Functional Fitness is through one-on-one sessions.

But some people aren’t into that approach, and some aren’t interested in learning complex barbell movements. Some just want to sweat and smile—an amazing combination. An all-time great, in fact.

So we’re bringing back the bootcamp.

Starting May 13, our Fitness Foundations Bootcamp will run for 6 weeks, Mondays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. Joanna Gies, our registered dietitian, has taught fitness classes for years and is fired up to offer something new at Functional Fitness 204.

The classes are suited to people at all fitness levels, and they’ll be designed for sweat and smiles. There is no on-ramp. Anyone can start. We’ll get people moving and smiling with safe, fun, high-energy movements that will give them a huge return on their time investment.

The program will help people:

  • Change the number on the scale
  • Change body composition
  • Tone up
  • Build strength
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Shake off the winter frost and get ready for spring and summer

More than anything else, it will be fun.

This program is perfect for people who are new to fitness and current members who’d like a change of pace.

If you know someone who might be interested in this 6-week challenge, please share this page with them. And if you’d like to sign up, you can do so here:
