Valentine's Day Massacre Update

The Valentine’s Day Massacre will be held Feb. 16, 2013, at Functional Fitness 204. This is a no-frills, one-day competition for affiliate teams of 4.

More event and registration details will be posted soon, but for now check out the info below to find out how to get involved. We will be making teams from Functional Fitness 204 first, but we will have space for teams from other gyms. Open registration for teams will be sometime after Jan. 14, and we’ll let you know the date and time well in advance.

What level of skill is required to compete?

This is a competition for athletes of various levels of ability, but you should be very familiar with all Functional Fitness movements. As one example, if you are currently learning the snatch or clean with an empty barbell only, we’d suggest you wait until our next competition, but you will not be not required to have a body-weight snatch or a 225-lb. clean and jerk. General proficiency with most common movements will be enough. You do not have to be able to do every single Functional Fitness movement, as you will be relying on your teammates in some cases. See below for more details on that.
How can Functional Fitness 204 athletes sign up to participate? Email jenn@Functional Fitness204.com by Jan. 9 and let her know you want to compete. Space is limited, so spots will be first come, first served, and preference will be given to athletes who did not get into FrostFit. Email early if interested! Do I have to sign up with a team? No. The 204 coaching staff will be creating our teams. See below. How will 204 teams be created? 204 teams will be created on a first-come-first-served basis, but ensuring teams are “complete” will also be a factor, meaning that the team of four will have a complete set of skills as a group even if some athletes cannot perform all Functional Fitness movements (see below). We will not be “stacking” teams. Our goal is to create the best competitive experience for all athletes. Do I have to be able to do everything RX’d and lift regional-level weights to compete? No. Teams will be created so that each has a complete set of skills. For example, we will make sure one person on the team has gymnastics skills if the others don’t. How much will it cost? No more than $50 + GST per person. More details to come. How do other gyms register? We will be opening registration to local Functional Fitness gyms the week of Jan. 14. Specific dates, times and details will be posted as well as emailed directly to gym owners. Registration will be open to out-of-province gyms only if space is still available. We love the out-of-town crew and would love to see you, but we want to make sure we have enough space for the local community first. How should other gyms form teams? We recommend the coaches at affiliates create their teams. Movements will not be released before registration, but coaches are advised to ensure their teams do not have glaring weaknesses across all members. For instance, it would be a mistake to form a team on which no members can do pull-ups. How can I volunteer for the event? Email jenn@Functional Fitness204.com and let her know what you’d be comfortable doing. The competition will run from about 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and various roles include judging (experience necessary), equipment set-up, scoring, general assistance and so on.
